What does a personal driver actually do?

A professional chauffeur comes to you and drives your own car, for the hours you have booked, on the itinerary you set.

That is genuinely the whole model, and its simplicity is the point. There is no vehicle to choose, no fleet category to select, no arrival of an unfamiliar car. Your car leaves your driveway with someone else at the wheel, and you sit in it as a passenger.

What the hours contain is up to you, and in practice it is rarely a single trip. A typical arrangement covers a set of errands, appointments and social commitments across a morning or an afternoon — the surgery, then the pharmacy, then lunch, then home — with the driver waiting between stops rather than being re-summoned for each one.

That waiting is a large part of the value and it is what a rideshare cannot replicate. An app-based ride is priced to move, so a forty-minute appointment means being dropped off, ordering again afterwards, and waiting for a match outside a medical building. A booked driver is simply still there.

**The vehicle.** A car service arrives in its own vehicle, chosen for the job from a fleet. A personal driver arrives to drive yours.

**The shape of the booking.** A car service is bought per journey: an airport transfer, a night out, a cruise transfer. A personal driver is bought per block of time, usually recurring — the same afternoon each week rather than a trip on a date.

**Continuity.** Because the arrangement recurs, it becomes practical to have the same person most of the time. A dispatched car service rotates whoever is available, which is entirely appropriate for an airport run and much less so for someone who will be in a car with this person every Tuesday.

**What is being bought.** With a car service you are buying a journey. With a personal driver you are buying time and the ability to keep using your own car.

And people who simply prefer their own car. It has their child seats already fitted, it fits the dog, the golf clubs live in the back, and it is set up the way they like it.

What about insurance and liability?

This is the question to settle before the first booking, in writing, and the honest answer is that it depends on the arrangement rather than being a single universal rule.

What is worth understanding is why it is not obvious. A conventional car service operates its own vehicles under its own commercial policy, so the coverage question never reaches you. A friend borrowing your car is covered, broadly, by your own policy. A professional driving your vehicle under a paid arrangement sits between the two, and the specifics depend on how the operator's coverage is written and on the terms of your own policy.

So ask three questions and get the answers in writing. What coverage does the operator carry for driving a client's vehicle, and can you see a certificate of insurance. Does your own insurer need to be told, and do they have a position on paid drivers. And what is the procedure if there is an incident.

When is a personal driver the wrong choice?

More often than the framing of this page implies, and it is worth saying so.

If you need occasional airport runs, book a car service. An airport transfer is a solved problem, the vehicle is chosen for luggage, and you do not need your own car sitting at the airport or being driven back without you.

If your need is genuinely occasional and unscheduled — a ride home from a dinner, an evening out — that is a rideshare or a standard booking. The value of a personal driver is concentrated in recurrence, and a service bought for continuity you do not need is just a more expensive way to take one trip.

If your vehicle is unsuitable, the arrangement fights itself. A two-seat car, or one with no comfortable rear seat, means being chauffeured from the front passenger seat, which is not what most people picture.

And if what you actually want is a full-time employee — someone available on call, doing more than driving — that is employment, with payroll, taxes and an employment relationship. A personal driver service is deliberately not that, and for most families that is the feature rather than the limitation.
