When Miami Is Worth the Drive

From Boca Raton, MIA is 45 to 60 minutes without traffic and meaningfully more with it. From the northern county it is well over an hour. Those are real numbers, and they mean Miami should be a deliberate choice rather than a default. It is the right choice when the route only exists there — much of the long-haul and Latin American network, and a good deal of the international schedule generally. It is the wrong choice when a comparable flight leaves from Fort Lauderdale, because you are trading an hour of your day each way for a marginal fare difference. Arrivals at a Big, Busy Terminal

This is the airport where the meet-and-greet earns its keep. MIA's arrivals halls are large and crowded, the kerbside is congested, and coordinating a pickup by phone after a nine-hour flight — often with a phone that has not found a network yet — is a genuinely poor experience. PortMiami handles the largest ships sailing from South Florida, and it sits a short run from the airport terminals. That makes MIA the natural pairing for the big-ship itineraries in a way Palm Beach cannot match. Embarkation morning has one failure mode and it is always the same: a group split across several vehicles arrives across half an hour with the luggage separated from the people. One vehicle fixes it — the Mercedes Sprinter takes fourteen passengers and fourteen bags. The return is the same problem inverted.
